Jumbo Resort “foundations” located in Avalanche Path, says new report
Immediately prior to expiration of Jumbo Glacier Resort’s environmental approval, two small cement slabs were poured in an attempt to demonstrate that work on the proposed development was substantially started. These slabs apparently represent the day lodge and an additional service building. Currently, BC Environment Minister, Mary Polak, is making a decision as to whether the construction of the proposed $600 million dollar venture can be considered “substantially started.” Any development must meet conditions set out by the Environmental Assessment Certificate. The Environmental Assessment Certificate includes a very specific legally ...
Jumbo: No Substance
October 12 was a landmark date in the ongoing Jumbo saga. It was the date that I, and many others, have been awaiting for five years. At 11:59pm on October 12, the Environmental Certificate for the Jumbo Glacier Resort expired. Maybe. Over the course of the past 24 years, there have been a lot of landmark dates and landmark decisions. The question is always: what does this mean? What now? Here’s my take on where we're at and where we're going.

Today, the Union of BC Municipalities unanimously passed a motion opposing provincial funding of municipalities without residents.
Delegates representing municipalities across British Columbia voted unanimously to urge the Province of BC to stop funding towns without a population.
Put forward by Invermere Mayor Gerry Taft, the resolution is directed at the Jumbo Glacier Mountain Resort Municipality:
"THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that UBCM inform the Province of British Columbia that they are strongly opposed to the funding of any municipalities without residents."
The Jumbo Glacier Mountain Resort Municipality was created on February 19, 2013. Despite ...
Community Impact
The voices against the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort are as diverse as the valley itself. From the owners of a local heli-skiing operation, to skiers, snowmobilers, Olympians, hunters, environmentalists, business owners, octogenarians and teenagers. Thousands of letters were sent, meetings attended, applications and court cases filed and monitoring camps installed.Permanent development in the Jumbo Valley would have meant corporatization of one of the most cherished wilderness areas in the East Kootenay region. It would also have led to controlled public access in surrounding and equally beloved areas and historic local recreation destinations.

Grizzly Bears
The grizzly bear, one of the Ktunaxa Nation’s principal spirits, makes its spiritual home in Jumbo and goes there to heal. In the Ktunaxa creation story, the grizzly bear makes way for the first humans by retreating into the mountains. In return, humans must respect the grizzly by acting as stewards of the land.
Economic Feasibility
The East Kootenay region is full of people who love to ski. People are behind ski resorts that make sense for the communities they are built around. Economically, the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort is not feasible—not only for the nearby communities, but also for BC provincial taxpayers as a whole.
