“The Town of Nothing” Goes on Tour

If you haven't read it yet, you should. And here's your opportunity: "The Town of Nothing" is going on tour. All proceeds going to support the West Kootenay Eco Society to cover legal expenses of the judicial review of the Jumbo Glacier Mountain Resort Municipality.“The Town of Nothing” is set in a beautiful mountain valley with lush illustrations of the animals and places. The place is quite something, especially to the people and animals who have always lived there, but the “Nothing” is the town that isn’t there. The text is a series of puns on the word "nothing." The political component some of you might detect is more subtle ...

Ktunaxa and Qat’muk

In 2010, the Ktunaxa Nation traveled to the BC legislature in Victoria to deliver the Qat’muk Declaration. Qat’muk is the Ktunaxa name of the lands that include the area of the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort. It is within the core of the Ktunaxa Nation territory and we understand that it is the home of grizzly bear spirit. The Declaration outlines the spiritual significance of Qat’muk and is an expression of Ktunaxa sovereignty and stewardship principles. Read the Declaration here.  Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa Nation Chair: “The Ktunaxa have been opposed to this development for over 20 years. We have tried to explain to provincial ministers and ...

The Jumbo Saga Continues: Glacier Resorts to seek judicial review

When Minister Polak announced on June 18, 2015 that the Jumbo Glacier Resort had not been substantially started, the Environmental Certificate for the project expired. Whoops of joy erupted across BC, celebrating the historic announcement and the effective rejection of Jumbo, but there was notable silence from project proponent Glacier Resorts Ltd. And understandably so - without an Environmental Certificate, no development on the project can proceed. But last week, Glacier Resorts announced its intention to seek a judicial review on Minister Polak's decision (read it here) - arguing that the 2 concrete slabs that were poured in the middle of an ...

Speak Out Against the Jumbo Official Community Plan

The Jumbo Glacier Mountain Resort Municipality's (JGMRM) Official Community Plan is “…intended to reflect the long term vision of the community.” Whose vision? What community? The JGMRM has no residents and an appointed mayor, and council and is funded by $200,000 of BC taxpayer dollars every year. Please take action and join us on June 16 to speak out against this process - how can you create and adopt an OCP when you have no community?! Who should come? YOU! “All persons who consider themselves affected by the adoption of the proposed OCP” – that’s you! Read the Draft OCP here. How to participate: 1) Come to the public ...

Substantial Start? We think not.

When the Jumbo Glacier Resort was given its Environmental Certificate (EC) in 2004, it had 5 years to start construction. After a one-time extension in 2009, the EC was set to expire on October 12, 2014. Glacier Resorts needed to "substantially start" the project by this date, complying with the nearly 200 conditions attached to the EC.Since October, we have been working hard to ensure that the government understands how little has been done so far. Wildsight and the Jumbo Creek Conservation Society are working with Ecojustice and during the past 8 months have made numerous submissions to the Minister regarding the question of substantial ...
