Bad news for Jumbo

Last week, the BC Supreme Court ruled in the Jumbo Glacier Resort vs. the Ministry of the Environment court case that went before the judge at the end of June. The case was about Jumbo Glacier Resort's expired environmental certificate. In BC, developers must substantially start their project within five years (renewable one time only) or else they lose the certificate. In 2015, then Environment Minister, Mary Polak, determined that after 10 years Glacier Resorts had not substantially started the Jumbo Glacier Resort, effectively rendering the environmental certificate expired. On Friday, the court ruled that the BC government must reconsider ...

Ski Canada Jumbo Article: Get your facts straight

In the winter 2017/18 issue of Ski Canada published an article on the Jumbo Glacier Resort by George Koch, an article that I found to be mis-leading, inaccurate and wholly insensitive towards the state of play and the importance of the Jumbo Valley, both ecologically for grizzly bears and spiritually for the Ktunaxa Nation.Businesses, governments and media outlets all need to be called out and held to account - it is more important than ever that we make informed decisions as citizens and as consumers. You can read the article below. Here is what I wrote:Dear Editor,I was extremely disappointed to read George Koch’s article on the ...

Laurance S. Rockefeller I’m not going to lie: it’s been a tough year for Jumbo. But the thing is, this year has only strengthened our resolve, put more fuel on our fire. Think Locally, Act Globally: Patagonia and Jumbo Wild

In late 2014, our long-running Jumbo Wild campaign was selected as Patagonia’s environmental spotlight for the coming year. We had no idea that our small, local campaign was under consideration. As the phone call check-ins got more frequent, and as more of the Patagonia team joined the calls, it quickly became clear we were about to become part of something much bigger.Since being proposed in 1991, The Jumbo Glacier Resort—a year-round ski resort that would occupy 6,000 hectares and access four glaciers in the Jumbo Valley, threatening wildlife and our Purcell Mountain wilderness—has been met with strong opposition from locals and the ...

Leah Evans: Join me in keeping the wild in our lives

I first discovered the Jumbo Valley on a fall camping trip when I was 13. I still remember the golden larch trees and the crisp blue water of the tarn. My parents talked to us about the importance of the area for bears and there was never any question in my mind: this place was extraordinary and should be kept wild.I want to be able to show my kids wild spaces like the Jumbo Valley one day, to cultivate their own inner wild and inspire a desire to care for the world we’ve been entrusted with. Will you join me in making sure the Jumbo Valley remains wild by making a donation to Wildsight today? This is our future and we all have a stake in it. ...

A Change is Gonna Come

“It’s been a long time coming, but I know a change is going to come.” ~Sam Cooke Fresh snow has completely covered Glacier Resort’s makeshift foundations in the Jumbo Valley. The working of the seasons, with no regard to the goings on of humans, always remind me that change is not only beautiful and powerful, but inevitable. With the Jumbo Wild film and Patagonia’s support last year, we were able to bring our message to the world. And you raised your voices in chorus with people from all around it: you want a wild Jumbo Valley.Glacier Resorts’ environmental certificate expired last year, a huge triumph. But the company is still ...
